NICE KITTY

So this notice was sent out at my work this week. I hope I get to see one!

The Environmental Affairs Program Office has received recent reports of possible mountain lion activities on Laboratory grounds. Mountain lions have been seen in the past on the Laboratory site and may still be present.

About half of California is prime mountain lion (or cougar) country. JPL is part of this lion country. These animals have always lived here, preying on deer and other wildlife and playing an important role in the ecosystem.

Employees are strongly cautioned against interfering with wild animals on Lab, especially large predators such as mountain lions. The following suggestions regarding mountain lions are from the California Department of Fish and Game and are based on studies of mountain lion behavior:

• Do not hike alone. Stay in groups if at all possible.
• Do not approach a lion. Most mountain lions will try to avoid a confrontation. Give them a way to escape.
• If you do see a lion, do not run from it. Stand still or back away slowly. Do all you can to appear larger. Do not crouch down or bend over.
• If attacked, fight back vigorously. Try to remain standing and face the animal.  Shout or scream loudly. Use rocks, sticks, caps, jackets or, finally, bare hands to defend yourself.

If you see a mountain lion or other large predator on Laboratory grounds, notify the JPL Security Office or Environmental Affairs.

CONFERENCES CAN BE FUN

Just to show that conferences aren’t all bad, here is a list of alcohol that I drank in three days. And I only paid for 1/3 of a bottle of wine and for one shot of tequila. Everything else was paid for by friends.

Thursday:

○      Hotel restaurant:

  • 1/3 bottle of Trapiche Malbec (very good)

○      Nacho Mama’s:

  • Park City Ale (local brew – good)

○      Hotel bar:

  • 1 shot Tres Generaciones Añejo tequila (great)

Friday:

○      Nacho Mama’s:

  • 2 strawberry margaritas with José Cuervo (great)

○      Grub Steakhouse:

  • 2 Cupcake Chardonnay’s (not very good)

○      Nacho Mama’s (again):

  • Piña Colada with José Cuervo

○      Hotel bar:

  • Beachcomber (triple sec, lime juice, grenadine, sour mix – good but a bit tart)

Saturday:

○      Hotel bar before the airport shuttle picked us up at 5pm:

  • Cutthroat Pale Ale (local brew – good)

If you are ever in Park City I recommend Nacho Mama’s. Awesome homemade salsa, and the owner is super nice. She’s Australian. So it’s a Mexican restaurant in Utah owned by an Autralian. Strange, but good. The entire place is decorated with an awesome mural like you’re in the south west. I had to walk down a hallway painted like a canyon to get to the bathrooms. Very nice. I’m including a picture of the bar to give you an idea of the mural.

5 SERVINGS OF VEGGIES AND CUTENESS A DAY

I just had to post this because it is absolutely adorable. The original blog that it comes from is Japanese, and then it was highlighted on Cute Overload. At first I was wondering whether or not this cat had a body and not just a head and front legs. The basket it is in is so tiny! None of my cats would ever allow me to do anything like this.

Stuff on a cat's head

I have never seen a cat so serene!

The image above is from Cute Overload.  The original Japanese blog with even more pictures is here.
