BEST CHILDREN’S BOOK EVER!!

Yesterday I was at Barnes and Noble bookstore and was browsing the children’s section (since my sister-n-law and a friend are pregnant) and I came across this awesome book called That’s Why We Don’t Eat Animals by Ruby Roth. If you want to traumatize your children so they grow up to be militant vegans, this is the way to do it. Here are some images from the book:

The books switches between happy animals and sad animals. The illustrations are really good, though. And there’s nothing too violent. Just sad animals like the poor chickens above. I want to get it for my veggie friend who is pregnant.

SLOPPY VEGGIE JOES

My first attempt at making vegetarian food was sloppy joes using lentils instead of beef. It turned out pretty well. The most amazing thing about it is that Hubby actually likes it. I was shocked. Here is a picture of it on a healthy whole wheat bun. It tastes better than it looks.

And here’s the recipe in case you want to try it. I got it off of http://www.allrecipes.com somewhere.

In a large pan combine:

  • 1 c. lentils
  • 4 c. water (this was a bit much, next time I make it I’ll try using 3 cups so I don’t have to drain it)
  • 1 onion, diced (the original recipe called for red but I used a white one that I already had)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 carrot, diced
  • 1 green pepper, diced
  • 1/2 red pepper, diced
  • 1 bay leaf

Simmer 20 min. till tender, drain, remove bay leaf. Stir in:

  • 6 oz. can tomato paste
  • 8 oz. can tomato sauce
  • 2 1/2 T. chili powder
  • 1 tsp. oregano
  • 1 tsp. sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp. paprika
  • 1/2 tsp. sugar
  • 1 T. prepared mustard (I used yellow mustard and just squeezed some in without measuring)
  • 1/4 tsp. apple cider vinegar (I probably put in about a Tablespoon, I just added without really measuring)

Heat through and serve on whole wheat rolls.

I THINK I’M TURNING VEGETARIAN

Last week Hubby and I watched a documentary called Food Inc. Let me warn you, if you are at all squeamish or sensitive to horrible animal cruelty, do not watch this. Or at least skip the first 10 minutes. It will make you never want to eat mass-market meat again. It’s absolutely disgusting. So after I watched it I decided to be vegetarian, with the exception of eating meat when I know that the source is sustainable and humane, like meats from Niman Ranch or Whole Foods Market. So for the most part I eat no meat.

I feel kind of sheepish about this, no pun intended. I make fun of my vegetarian friends, in a good natured way. And now I am one, sort of. I need to find a name for a vegetarian that only eats humanely raised and slaughtered meat.

JOBLESS – DAY 8

Don’t forget to shave your legs and pits, or if you’re a guy, your face. You don’t want to become a total slob. It’s the same thinking as not wearing sweatpants everywhere. Just because your unemployed doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look decent when you go to the supermarket.
