MCCALLUM GROVE AND CRITTERS

06 Jul

McCallum Grove is part of the Coachella Valley Preserve. It has a spring which provides water year-round to this desert environment.

McCallum's pond.

Little fish (pupfish?) that live in the pond, and are an endangered species because they are only found in a few habitats.

The pond is in this picture, it's just very lush around it.

Here is almost the exact same shot taken on December 31st, 2010. The grass is a lot higher now after the winter and spring rains.

A sand dune with animal tracks going across it.

A blue dragonfly, although the vibrant blue didn't show up well in the photo.

A lovely red dragonfly.

A little brown lizard, not exactly sure what kind.

This is a male zebra-tailed lizard. Look at the nice stripes on his tail!

You can just see the bright blue and yellow on his belly. And that's not his tongue, I think he has a bit of red leaf or something stuck near his mouth.

I think this may be a red-shouldered hawk.

Another shot of the same hawk.
