PRICKLY CACTI AT MOORTEN BOTANICAL GARDENS

Here are some nice pointy cactuses.

White prickles.

Teeny prickles.

Big red prickles.

Big prickles.

The leaves on this are like little saw blades.

Red and prickly.

CACTUSES AT THE MOORTEN PART 2

This one is fluffy.

This one grows hanging down!

This one looked like little mini palm trees.

I thought this was pretty.

A super close up of this cactus.

CACTUSES AT THE MOORTEN PART 1

Here are some of the neat cactuses at the Moorten Botanical Gardens in Palm Springs.

I thought these looked kind of like tiny mouths.

Lumpy.

This reddish cactus was pretty.

Another angle on the red cactus.

A tall, red topped cactus in the cactarium.

Here's the top of the cactus.

They had a nice lava-bed display.

More of the lava-bed display.

MORE OF MOORTEN BOTANICAL GARDENS

This is the family home. I'm not sure if the family still lives there. I know on the second floor there's a room for brides at weddings.

More of the house and lawn.

I just really liked this wagon wheel and the colors on the bolt.

A dinosaur footprint!

Fossilized seashells in rock.

I think these might be quartz.

THE MOORTEN BOTANICAL GARDENS

While in Palm Springs Hubby and I went to the Moorten Botanical Gardens for the first time. It’s very close to downtown Palm Springs, and if you’re a hipster, it’s walking distance from the Ace Hotel. The Moorten has a long history, and you should check out its website if you’re interested. They have desert plants from deserts all over the world, and also a “cactarium,” sort of like a cactus greenhouse. Here’s the cactarium.

This is the view as you walk into the cactarium.

Duh.

Some of the cactuses grow horizontally along the ground.

A hanging cactus growing downwards!

Some cute small cactuses.

COACHELLA VALLEY PRESERVE

On Sunday, before it got unbearably hot, Hubby and I went to see the California fan palm groves at the Coachella Valley Preserve. The California fan palm is the only native palm in the area. There is also the McCallum Oasis, a spring-fed pond. The colors seem off because the sky was a yucky shade of blech.

Here's the view from the parking lot.

Here is the sign near the entrance explaining the grove.

Here's the grove from a distance.

The dead fronds form "skirts" on the trees that animals can nest in.

Even though it is July, the river bed is still lush from winter and spring rains.

Compare the above photo with this photo that I took in the same area on December 31st of 2010.

The greenery was up past our heads in some spots.

I liked the poofy flowers on this plant.

PALM SPRINGS – HOT AND HUMID

For the holiday weekend Hubby and I went to Palm Springs and stayed at my aunt’s condo. It was about one billion degrees outside, and very very humid, which was hard to adjust to. Saturday it gave me a headache, and Sunday Hubby was sick from it. But we still had fun. Here are the mountains near the condo:
